George and Janny Roijers-Niewets celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on December 29. After missing the opportunity earlier, Mayor Evert Jan Nieuwenhuis finally joined the celebration on Tuesday, February 18, making it a joyous occasion once again.
Janny remarked that being together for sixty years has been effortless. 'We go our own way and always find things to do,' she shared. However, George noted that things have changed over time. 'You have to accept it. We can still manage everything ourselves and do not need assistance. If needed, we can always call our children,' he added.
George, a fisherman from Valkenburg, encountered Janny, a grower's daughter from Boskoop, when he was 16. Their love story began when George, unable to attend a planned exhibition with a friend due to illness, embarked on his own journey. Despite arriving late in Boskoop, George's decision to take the train alone proved worthwhile as he met Janny and they started dating.
George worked for years at the post office and dedicated his time to church volunteering and the Red Cross. Janny, on the other hand, raised their three sons and engaged in hobbies like knitting and embroidery. The couple made sacrifices to make ends meet, with Janny using all her savings to buy her wedding dress.
Despite health challenges, the couple finds joy in their retirement years. They moved to a new home sixteen years ago due to health reasons but continue to cherish each moment together. 'We often stroll around the neighborhood with our walkers,' George shared, emphasizing his passion for fishing at the Petteplas.
